Every child can succeedit is the vision of the CEC
and the purpose of these modules. How do some schools achieve
distinction as excellent centers of learning? What specifics
are they doing that generate documented, repeatable results?
The information that follows provides insight into the "Best
Practices" and captures a virtual “How to Guide”
for change.
Change to excellence is not, however, easy or without resistance.
Change is never easy. However, studentsthe foundation
of tomorrows' societyare the beneficiaries of the standards
we set for ourselves today as educators.
The identification of what is working in schools across the
state of Florida serves as a compelling demonstration that
excellence can, and is, being achieved. Your school has a
corresponding school in the state that may serve to exemplify
excellence (as seen below). They may function, along with
the other schools, as a template for your school to achieve
excellence.
High Performing Elementary School Categories:
- Schools with both 50 percent or more of their students
on the State's Free and Reduced Lunch Program (FRL) and
10 percent or more of their students classified as Limited
English Proficiency (LEP)
- Schools with 50 percent or more of their students receiving
FRL
- Schools with between 30-50 percent of their students receiving
FRL
- Schools consistently
high in reading performance
- High performing schools regardless of FRL or LEP status
High Performing Secondary School
Categories
- Schools with 40 percent or more of their students on the
State's FRL Program
- Schools with between 20-40 percent of their students receiving
FRL
- Schools with 10 percent or more of their students classified
as LEP
- High performing schools regardless of FRL or LEP
Perusal of the schools in each of these categories demonstrates
that success is individual. There are no "quick fixes"
or "one size fits all" templates for change to excellence.
Each school has its own culture and personality and that individuality
is as specific as the goals and actions that will describe
your road to excellence.
The status of "Best Practice" schools identified
by the Florida School Report attests to the success of numerous
approaches, tailored by school leaders to their own communities,
their own staffs, and their own students. At the same time,
those schools offer examples of how different leaders have
drawn successfully on the common ground of research and experience,
both of which are shared in these tutorials.
