3. Evaluate the Mentoring and the Learning Team Processes

Feedback is essential for gauging the needs and progress of the Learning Teams. Formative assessment of the mentor program can be made at various intervals by short 3-5 question surveys or brief interviews with a sample of the participants. Mentors and new teachers might keep journals or checklists of activities and dates during the year.

The Learning Team members should keep a journal of activities that include their meeting sessions and activities beyond formal meeting times. Learning Team leaders can review the team journals to build a synopsis of the team's activity and learning. A mid-year and end-of-the-year 3-5 question survey should also pinpoint successes, concerns, and professional learning needs for future planning.

There are excellent resources to assist in evaluating mentor programs and Learning Teams, for example those available in the National Staff Development Council (NSDC) Library. Visit the NSCD Library.
