As plans are made for meetings from August to June (the
new school year), it is advisable to plan a staff development
or professional learning curriculum. If a staff is just beginning
the cultural change process, the activities outlined in Immediate
Results may be appropriate and sufficient. Alternatively,
the Leadership and Learning Teams may want to initiate a
faculty learning curriculum that provides a structure for
a permanent cycle of continuous improvement concurrently
or in the following academic year. As teachers themselves
become students of their profession, a suggested calendar
and format follows:
- Build a Professional Learning Calendar to
distribute to the faculty. For example, schedule time
for Learning Team to meet 20 times each year on an early-release during
second and third weeks of the month (or whenever time permits).
- Provide 7-10 sessions in the schedule for the Learning
Team to discuss the book(s) selected for group study in
the school year. Seven additional sessions will also be
needed
for data collection and immediate results-focused action
research. The schedule may also include a few days for
vertical team articulation across the grade levels to compare
findings
by subject areas. The final meeting date should be dedicated
to displaying the year’s work from each Learning Team
in a festive gathering or Celebration of Learners.
