2. Be Responsive to Teacher Professional Learning Needs: Content and Methodology

Curriculum mapping, along with action research, is another tool that accelerates school and student performance increases by expanding action goals that are identified as efficacious and implementing, horizontally, within, and across subject areas, as well as, vertically across grade levels.

The action research process may reveal gaps in teacher knowledge and understandings of key methodologies and even core content in their subject areas. Such gaps should be communicated back to the Leadership Team and addressed as quickly as possible. Collegiality between Leadership Team and the Learning Teams is integral to advancing the entire faculty’s capacity and ability to excel. One proactive step leaders can take is to familiarize the entire faculty in Marzano’s research from Classroom Instruction That Works. This publication identifies nine teaching strategies that improve student achievement. More importantly, it provides teaching criteria for each strategy so that the teacher knows whether or not it is being implemented properly.
