The leader’s role is to set the context for the interaction
of the faculty in Learning Teams. The change process, by
definition, requires questioning the status quo. This can
be construed as a personal affront when questions and constructive
criticism is leveled against people rather than policies
or pedagogical style.
“Critical Friends” is a euphemism to describe
the challenging role for each member of the Learning Team—one
who cares enough to identify and verbalize how a friend may
improve. Strategies for encouraging “Critical Friends” relationships
include establishing “rules of the road.”
- The protocol provided here (worksheet/handoutSchedule
for the Tuning Protocol) is an example of establishing
some “rules of the road” so that all teachers,
within the context of their respective Learning Teams, may
have an opportunity to share insights and criticisms professionally,
without it becoming personal. This setting of rules is especially
critical in the early stages of interaction, as it facilitates
participation and reduces domination by teachers who might
consider the area under discussion their “turf”.
- The Leadership Team should practice using the protocol
in their own meeting prior to meeting with the Learning
Teams.
